Salat al-Istikhara: how to pray it
Istikhara means asking Allah to choose what is good for you. The Prophet ﷺ taught it to his Companions "as he taught them a surah of the Qur'an", for every matter (Bukhari).
How to pray
- Make wudu and pray two rak'ahs of voluntary prayer, at a time when prayer is not disliked.
- After the salam, praise Allah, send Salawat on the Prophet ﷺ, and recite the Istikhara dua (Istikhara Dua).
- Where the dua says "hadhal-amr" (this matter), name or think of your decision.
- Then go ahead with what you feel at ease with, trusting that Allah will make the good easy.
What to expect
There is no requirement to see a dream. The answer is often that one path becomes easier and the other is blocked. You may repeat Istikhara, and it is good to also consult people you trust: "Whoever seeks Allah's guidance and consults others will not regret" is a well-known saying of the scholars.
Questions
Can I pray Istikhara for marriage?
Yes. Istikhara is for any permissible decision: marriage, work, study, travel or a purchase.
Do I have to sleep after Istikhara?
No. Seeing a dream is not part of it. Proceed with the choice that feels right and watch for ease or difficulty.
