Stories of the Qur'an

The Prophet Ibrahim and the fire

The story of the Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham), the idols and the fire, told from the Qur'an.

  1. A young man seeking the truth

Ibrahim saw his father and people worshipping idols they had made with their own hands. Looking at a star, the moon and the sun, he said "I do not love things that set" and turned to the Creator of the heavens and the earth (6:74-79).

  2. Advice to his father

With great respect and tenderness he said: "O my father, why do you worship what neither hears nor sees nor benefits you at all?" (19:41-48).

  3. The broken idols

When his people went to their festival, he broke the idols but left the biggest. Asked "Who did this?", he said "Ask them, if they can speak," calling them to think for themselves (21:57-67).

  4. The fire

In their anger they threw him into a great fire. Allah said: "O fire, be coolness and safety for Ibrahim," and the fire did not harm him (21:68-70).

  5. Emigration and the Kaaba

Ibrahim emigrated from his homeland. Years later, with his son Ismail, he raised the foundations of the Kaaba, praying "Our Lord, accept this from us" (2:127).

  6. Submission

Seeing in a dream that he was sacrificing his son, he consulted him; Ismail said "Father, do as you are commanded." When both submitted, Allah ransomed him with a great sacrifice. Eid al-Adha remembers this (37:102-107).

  7. Lessons

Seeking the truth with reason, courtesy towards parents, courage in speaking the truth and complete submission to Allah. Ibrahim is called Khalilullah, the friend of Allah.
