Stories of the Qur'an

The Prophet Nuh and the Ark

The story of the Prophet Nuh (Noah) and the flood, told from the Qur'an.

  1. A people gone astray

Nuh was sent to a people who worshipped idols and spread injustice. He called them to worship Allah alone and to seek His forgiveness (Nuh 71:1-4).

  2. Nine hundred and fifty years of calling

Night and day, in private and in public, he called them for centuries. They put their fingers in their ears, covered themselves with their garments and grew arrogant. Few believed (29:14; 71:5-9).

  3. Build the ark

Allah commanded him to build an ark under His eyes and inspiration. The chiefs of his people mocked him whenever they passed, but Nuh kept working patiently (11:37-38).

  4. The flood begins

When the command came, rain poured from the sky and water burst from the earth. Nuh took the believers and a pair of every creature aboard, saying: "In the name of Allah be its course and its anchorage" (11:40-41; 54:11-12).

  5. A father's call

Among waves like mountains, Nuh called to his son who persisted in disbelief: "Ride with us." The son said, "I will take refuge on a mountain," and a wave came between them. Faith comes from the heart, not from lineage (11:42-46).

  6. On Mount Judi

"O earth, swallow your water; O sky, withhold." The waters subsided and the ark came to rest on Mount Judi. Nuh and those with him disembarked in peace and blessing (11:44, 48).

  7. Lessons

Patience, carrying on with the truth however far the outcome seems, and trust in Allah's promise. Salvation comes by boarding the ark of truth.
